"The Book of Three" by Lloyd Alexander is the first in his acclaimed Chronicles of Prydain series. Taran the young pig keeper is forced to find his lost pig Hen Wen, the oracle. Along the way he battles against the forces of evil, rescues his pig, and fights the dreaded Horn King (probably one of the coolest villians in children's literature). The last book in the series won the Newberry Medal for excellence in Children's Literature in 1969.
