progress

I'm making a little progress.

I get sidetracked by other things though... Like where would garit get snow sandals? The answer? Probably a smallish snow shoe...

There is no cheese in Asian food?

What are the limits to taxidermy? Could you stuff a squid?

Ford Festiva?

wha?

I fixed the band thing on my watch. I've had the watch for over a year, and it never fit right. So I woke up and took it apart. Now it works. My watch syncs up to the Atomic Clock in Denver everyday. So yes, I know what time it is. It also beeps really loud and lights up.

I spent a good 5 hours on the thesis before my brain shut down. I'm behind, but I think I can do this. That reminds me- I need to update my other blog. I'll be back in a few.

guh

I've been slacking. I'm not as far as I'd like to be, but my thesis is rolling forth. I've formed half of my committee, and we'll see what recommendations they'll give me. I keep finding new information, and it's slowing the writing process down... ugh.

I didn't get to go on my that long bike ride over the weekend. Too much stuff, and I ended up chauffeuring my wife around the valley when I should have been riding around avoiding cars. Instead I'll get on the stationary bike tonight and pound out some miles.

I've started a new game on the original NES Legend of Zelda. I'm going to beat the game with the wimpy sword, and as few items as possible. I plan on dying alot, though I should beat the game in a few hours (I'm a pro?). It isn't really anything to brag about.

movie

The Sword of Doom follows the story of Ryunosuke, a nihilistic samurai. He shows little emotion, and no remorse for the things he is capable of doing. Throughout the movie his blank stare heightens the realization that he embraces his insanity. There is no mercy. His unorthodox sword form confuses his opponents: lowering his katana, seemingly off guard yet entirely alert. His silent confiendence makes him an efficient killer.

Outcast from his village, he finds work with a vigilante group, killing political figures to support the local Shogunate.

All goes according to plan until, one snowy night, his groups mistakes a sword master for a target and they are massacred. Ryunosuke hesitates and makes no move. The master leaves him with these words:

"The sword is the soul. Study the soul to know the sword. Evil mind, evil sword."

Is his confience shaken? Ryunosuke seems determined to continue his own downward spiral and the destruction of everything around him. Ghosts of the murdered victims begin to haunt him. He loses all sanity and begins to kill his (seemingly endless) group of assassins he's been working with.

In the final scene (which lasts over seven minutes, one of the longest sword fights on film) Ryunosuke continues to kill everyone in his path. Little by little the gang wears Ryunosuke down, but his endless insanity sustains him. The film ends abruptly with a freeze frame of Ryunosuke about to strike.

This was supposedly the first film in a trilogy of movies, based on a popular novel. The others were never produced, leaving many elements of the plot unresolved.

Director: Kihachi Okamoto

Starring: Tatsuya Nakadai and Toshiro Mifune

1965. Black and White. 121 minutes.

bleh

News Story from Utah:

Local idiot shattered a toilet when his gun fell out of its holster while he pulled up his pants after using the bathroom at a Carl's Jr. restaurant. The gun fired when it hit the floor, shattering the toilet. I wonder what went through his mind at that moment.

Too many people have guns. There. I've said it. I'm all for shooting stuff and blowing things up, but come on. Even though he had a concealed weapons permit (everyone in the state seems to have one), it just makes me wonder why he was careless enough to let his gun drop. I'm sure his hands were greasy from his delicious... sweet... Six Dollar Double Western Bacon Burger (with extra cheese.. I'm so hungry I could die). Who knows.

Too many people watch old Chuck Norris movies and think that they'll become the next hero if a situation should arise. Supermarket war zones. Library standoffs. Instead of heroes you get bumbling idiots leaving their guns all over the place and dropping them in public restrooms. Accessibility to guns... I think is an issue about proper firearm education. Another problem is people jumping on the bandwagon because so and so has a concealed weapons permit.. so I gotta get one... I gotta feel safe because everyone else has a weapon... I'm a victim if I don't protect myself with a gun... blah blah blah.

I don't know. I think I'd rather learn Karate. And shut up, I know ninja skills won't stop bullets aimed at your face. But you'll probably end up shooting yourself on accident anyways. You can buy a gun, but don't be an idiot.

bleh.

ha

No room on the road? Make your own bike lane.

new shoes

New shoes came in the mail today...

Simple Shoes made from recycled bike and car tires and other ecofriendly materials. I haven't bought new shoes in a long time, and I wanted something that would probably last a long time. I had a couple pairs of Simple Shoes in highschool, and I always thought they were awesome shoes.

Just a few things:

I'm going to try and finish my rough draft of my thesis this week.

I'm surprised and confused with the crowd of people that follow me on twitter. I know none of these people.

I saw some dude applying for a job.. on his application he wrote MEXICO in bold where his address should have gone.

Hmm.. what else?

I don't know.

classes

I hate changing my school schedule the day that classes start. The final line up looks like this:

1. Ancient Anthropology: This course is actually an Archeology methods course, which looks like it will be fun.

2. History of the Middle East since World War I.

3. Senior Thesis Project. How is my thesis going right now? I don't want to talk about it.

4. World War II

And that's it. I'm wondering what the work load will be. I've got this crazy thesis paper hanging over my head... oh man. I'm going crazy.

photos

A couple of pictures from a bike ride the other day. I stopped at the top of the hill overlooking the city center. I was surprised that the bike path was clear (and finished!).

The view was clear before the oncoming storm that night. It was a good ride, and it wasn't that cold...
